Camera Rig (just getting started…haha)
dslr cameras

Update: This photo was taken a while back and the amount of camera gear I have has grown by leaps and bounds (not sure yet if this is a good or bad thing). You can see the new gear photo by going here.

Original Desc: Well here it is, my camera gear…all indivudally noted and all strewn out for the world to see. 90% of it was bought in the last 10 months. It all fits in the camera bags at the top and the bags are normally packed to the brim with the gear.

My wife is a very patient and kind soul but I think I’m at the limit for a good long while, when I was arranging this stuff on the bed to take photo of it in our guest room she just about snapped seeing everything laying there. If I buy much else I will probably be justifiably shot, so if I stop suddenly posting to Flickr you’ll know I likely got a new piece of gear and was subsequently killed.

I enjoy a number of hobbies (music, cars, cycling, camping, boating, technology and more), but one of the things I like about photography is it’s a hobby that can be incorperated into every other hobby and aspect of life. In photography I’ve found something that I really, really enjoy and is a way I can have a semi-creative outlet for my soul. But as cool as photography is, music is still my main passion and I think that’s the way it will always be…

NOTE: This photo made it into Flickr’s ‘Explore" as one of the top five hundred most interesting photos on a particular day. You can see all of my photo’s that have made it into the Flickr Explore pages here.

*but I think I’m at the limit for a good long while*
I linked over to your wife’s pics…I think you can say the same about the shoes!

Amanda H&K on October 5th, 2010, 8:02 pm

I think there is counseling available for things like this. :)

sbluerock on October 5th, 2010, 8:43 pm

I wish I needed counseling…

fensterj on October 5th, 2010, 8:48 pm

Now wait just one minute there sbluerock – talking about a woman’s shoes …

I have been (I believe) more than patient and understanding about this newest hobby (and might I just underline – is one of many — none of which are inexpensive – have you seen the pictures of the musical gear and there are no photos (yet) of the Italian road bike).

I, too, enjoy taking pictures (when I can pry the camera out of his hands for a moment) and think that he has real talent … just trying to get him to ease up on the purchases for a while :)

Amanda – I appreciate the support. I always know that you’ve got my back girl!

Vedia on October 5th, 2010, 9:07 pm

how much is all that?

fensterbme on October 5th, 2010, 9:52 pm

@Vedia: It’s free with a bunch (I mean a bunch) of Campbell’s Soup Labels.

Someone stop him! Most obsure item: Canon touch up paint!!? The only thing you have more of than camera equipment is tags!

sbluerock on October 5th, 2010, 11:19 pm

I missed the paint. Well then, the first step is admitting there is a problem. I’ll be glad to watch your stuff while you’re in rehab. I’m just down the road in Dayton. You could still visit.

algarvenicky on October 5th, 2010, 11:51 pm

you guys are funny, I mean maybe it could be called obsessive or something like that, but if you ever get bored with photography then call, hey I also love shoes too so you know maybe if your wife…. well you know!! ha lol

sigsegv on October 6th, 2010, 12:32 am

I’d hate to see what it’s like the night before a trip. "Now, what should I bring? The touch up paint, sure, but what else?" ;)

davebluedevil on October 6th, 2010, 12:45 am

Ha! This is amazing. I’ll have to post what you’re up against. Also, what did you shoot this pic with?

fensterbme on October 6th, 2010, 1:13 am

Here is the deal with the touch up paint… I bought my 70-200mm lens used, and the last guy who shot with it was a professional sports photographer so it had a number of scratches on the outside of the paint, you can order it for not to much from Canon. But I agree it’s an odd item you wouldn’t normally find…

@davebluedevil: I shot this photo with my friend Amanda’s Canon S400 Digital ELPH (I have one exactly like it, but it’s in Seoul Korea with a friend of mine).

My wife posted a photo of her purse dumped out and put notes over everything. That kind of gave me the idea for this photo… Thought it would be fun to show what I use to capture my photos, etc. and what goes in the camera bags.

yinyang on October 6th, 2010, 1:24 am

well at least you didn’t use the same bed to take photos of the camera stuff and the shoe stuff. you’ve got three bags – wonder how many your wife has….! :-)

But where do you sleep?

fensterbme on October 6th, 2010, 2:57 am

…this was the guest bedroom, and after taking the photo I quickly packed it all back up again. My wife seeing it all on display makes my wife accutely aware of how much stuff I’ve bought.

But sometimes I hold my 70-200mm as kind of a teddy bear/security blanket, the lens tells me I’m okay and everything will be alright. Ha!

jesus h!!! This makes my collection of gear look like a polaroid.

Richard- on October 6th, 2010, 4:39 am

This is terrific, both image and your commentary.

I have exactly the same situation here although I use all primes so my lens collection is different. However, if wifey knew what the 85mm f/1.2 set me back… let’s not go there. And, my wife’s in-house nickname is "Imelda."

aspechtl on October 6th, 2010, 5:36 am

This is a very great set! What kind of fotography do you run for? Nature, People…..

Sorgin on October 6th, 2010, 6:27 am

4 cameras in the pic+the one you use to take it, 5!! isn’t that too much?

fensterbme on October 6th, 2010, 7:24 am

@aspechtl: What do I run for… I enjoy street photography and really enjoy photographing people, not to much with nature… I am trying to shoot a bit of everything to get better generally. I would love to get into portrait photography and am about to start assisting a big time professional wedding/portrait photographer in town (Davis Photography) on a part time basis so hopefully I will learn a good bit more.

@Sorgin: Too many camera’s blasphemy I say! Ha, just joking… I only have one main camera that cost a good bit, 95% of the time I’m shooting with my Canon 20D. I also have an older Canon S400 point and shoot that I use when taking a massive camera rig just isn’t possible. This camera is getting a bit long in the tooth and it’s lower light shots are really rough, so it’s likely going to be replaced by the new Canon SD700 IS point and shoot, which my wife will normally carry in her purse.

As for the rest the Nikon was my first film SLR (bought it over ten years ago) and rarely use it. If I sold it now I would likely only get about $40 for it so I keep it for sentimental reasons. As for the other cameras, the Holga only costs $25, the Lomo LC-A I bought used for $100 (which is a good deal) and the Kodak was free and is more of a decoration than a camera..

M Dot on October 6th, 2010, 8:01 am

Your selection looks familliar. I understand what you mean about the wife hiding the body after your next purchase.

kones on October 6th, 2010, 8:59 am

very funny and amusing post, I share your views on bringing photography into all aspects of my life.

lomokev on October 6th, 2010, 9:41 am

you can trow every thing else in the bin and traval light with your Lomo LCA

Rixeaun™ on October 6th, 2010, 10:36 am

but then you’ll get blurry images…

puja on October 6th, 2010, 11:24 am

all that, and only one CF card?

fensterbme on October 6th, 2010, 11:39 am

I have a few smaller CF cards for my S400 Powershot, but no other big ones. It’s kind of a pain, and I will likely be buying a few more 2GB cards in the future.

I usually am only out shooting for a few hours and am then back home or back to my laptop where I can download my images. So the idea of spending a few hundred bucks on CF cards vs. buy something else with the cash proposistion is setup. Usually the other toy wins (I’m lusting after a nice ultra wide zoom at the moment, and my wife wants the new Canon 700 IS point and shoot).

I might start assiting a wedding photographer here in the near future, if so I will be buying the cards sooner than later. Shooting RAW space get’s eaten up fast.

lomokev on October 6th, 2010, 12:35 pm

rxn as long as you can judge distance and a stedy hand its not a problem, i can usally get a nice sharpe image. besides at leats it dose not take any time to warm up and i never says busy between shots

Rixeaun™ on October 6th, 2010, 12:35 pm

i like the lomo LCA a lot, but in some cases i know it just wouldn’t be the right camera. but maybe i have to practise focusing with my lomo a bit – your images, espacially the closer portraits seem to be very sharp…
for me, often it’s not easy to pick the right camera, but i like to have a wide choice, like a painter who uses many brushes.

How do you like the crumpler bags? I am thinking of getting a six milliong dollar home

fensterbme on October 6th, 2010, 1:51 pm

I love my Crumpler bags they are wonderful… They are very well built and high quality bags that should last years and still look good.

Personally I love the Crumpler bags because they don’t look so ‘camera bag’ish’, I’d much perfer my camera bag looked like a messenger bag… I’d perfer to blend in until I decide to pull out my camera. Since it’s more of a low key just a messenger bag thing I think it’s less likely it would catch a thief’s eye.

Crumpler 6M Dollar Home - Interior

I use the 7M dollar bag when I’m taking my telephoto lens, but normally I carry my 6M dollar bag.

~BranchDesign on October 6th, 2010, 2:36 pm

Cool, thanks. no dust problems? Some say they collect too much dust on the inside. I really like the look of them too.

fensterbme on October 6th, 2010, 3:27 pm

@AmyeJOYCE: No I don’t have any dust problems but I not usually outside or super dusty environments. I’m usually in the city, etc. so I’m in and out of places or doing street photography.

Since it just closes with a flap I guess I could see dust potentially getting in the sides where it doesn’t seal shut, but hasn’t been a problem for me… I wouldn’t reccomend the pack for back woods travels, etc. but for the average shooter who lives in a metro area I think they are the best.

Besides if dust did get in, I would simply remove my camera, lenses and flash… Grab a vacuum and suck out any dust/dirt and then re-insert the camera gear…

Enjoyed the photo, fensterbme. I’m waiting for my wife to go on a trip before I dare to assemble all of my gear in one place. =) I wanna know if you are going to need a bigger guest bed soon!

fensterbme on October 6th, 2010, 4:55 pm

@Mean Mister Mustard: Yeah my wife saw it and she was like ‘holy crap’, she took it well overall (her comments are above somewhere)… She has a finance degree and does all the finances so she knows how much I’ve spent.

Doubt I will need a larger guest bed in the near future… The only real items on the list at this point are, 1.) Ultra Wide Zoom (likey the Canon 10-22mm), 2.) Canon 1.4x tele-converter, 3.) Another Memory Card or two… Anything else is going to require I start making some cash from this….

Gary Lowell on October 6th, 2010, 4:59 pm

@ fensterj
You and my wife should get together and start a support group.

photorose on October 6th, 2010, 5:30 pm

I, too, have a few hobbies/addictions. I usually feel a bit guilty after a binge (like last month’s technology spree), so I insist that the hubby get a few things for himself (usually computer equipment, DVDs, or games.) I’m guessing that you wholeheartedly approve of a footwear shopping trip after getting a new toy (at least to assuage the guilt and keep things a little more equal.)

fensterbme on October 6th, 2010, 5:40 pm

@jillianfinn: Yeah I wholeheartedly encourage her to buy handbags (her fav.), shoes, etc. I think she deserves it, the last three and a half years she’s worked a job that required her to work between 60-85 hour weeks (she just quit two months ago). So when she was working I was like have fun, spend a little you’ve more than earned it.

I do feel guilty sometimes because this is just one hobby, I’m also into music and have crazy bass guitar rig (that I’ve built over a decade, and I used to play on a semi-pro basis but still it was a lot of money), into cycling and have a few bikes, cars and not to mention technology.

So it’s not that I have just one place I spend my money, it’s a number of them none of which are cheap… I’m someone who gets interested in things easily and when I decide to try my hand at something I want to jump in feet first.

photorose on October 6th, 2010, 5:57 pm

I understand totally! I have the same tendency to go overboard in the beginning and then my interest wanes. I try to accept that part of myself, and hold myself back whenever possible, which translates to spending less on my musical pursuits (because I know I’m not very good) than my technological pursuits.

Fortunately, my hubby has the bug, too, and now he works at a computer store, which only encourages my habit. He’s actually the one that talked me into getting my dSLR when my old digital camera died! That started my latest technology binge, which included accessories for the camera and upgrading software/hardware. I’m actually quite pleased with the results. I can justify spending money on technology because it’s an educational process. The more I know, the more it helps me professionally as I build my business.

You can also argue that the clothes and shoes your wife buys help her to portray a successful and professional image, thus helping her in her profession (if it is image based, and what isn’t these days?)

Maybe someday, you’ll find a way to fuse some interests together, for example, use your music and bike/car connections to advance your photography (shots for your portfolio.) Your interests can open doors because you are a fellow musician, car/bike collector, techie, etc.

fensterbme on October 6th, 2010, 6:14 pm

@jillianfinn: I have a rule when it comes to spending… Do it with cash or available funds. I don’t have any credit card debit from any of my hobbies… Also camera lenses retain about 80% of their value, and I try to buy used gear when possible.

I also made money on the technology stuff (I do side consulting, in addtional to being an IT professional by day) so my accountant writes everything off. With the music stuff it was semi-business and allowed me to tour the country for free (and make a bit of money along the way).

With the photography thing I’m probably about six months or less from doing it on a part-time basis as another side income thing… I think I’ve got a good eye and I can see that my photos continue to get better. So I feel like the areas I’ve put my cash either make money for me, or are hobbies that I’m semi-good at least.

I’m a Crumpler fan as well. Looking at the 7 Million bag now. Not sure it will hold everything I need.

fensterbme on October 7th, 2010, 1:24 am

@three15bowery: Well if a Crumpler 7 Million can’t hold it you don’t want it in a bag… The 7M is already almost to big and get’s almost too heavy when packed full. Currently I stuff and fill both the Six and Seven Million bags easily at the same time.
I’m moving to hardshell Pelican cases (probably two 1600 series cases) to move my gear… I will still use the Crumplers for smaller outings, and less serious stuff where everything doesn’t have to come with…

fensterbme on October 7th, 2010, 7:07 am

@afpoerbo: Yes any of the Canon 70-200mm lenses will fit into either the Six Million or Seven Million dollar homes. It’s a bit tight in the Six but is more than fine in the Seven.

afpoerbo on October 7th, 2010, 7:53 am

Big BAD Benny on October 7th, 2010, 12:11 pm

@afpoerbo: the Canon body with 70-200 mounted will fit horizontally in say the 7MDH, but that really limits putting other lenses etc in. The Brazillion Dollar Home is designed to fit this config vertically or two, side by side if req’d! :-)

Andrew15* on October 7th, 2010, 8:43 pm

jsmithphoto- That’s called a "Note."
Get the photo you want to add a note to, then look just a bit above the photo, where the "Add to Faves," "Blog This," and "All Sizes" are, while logged in on your account there should be a button next to the ones listed above that says "Add Note." Presto. Sometimes you can add notes to other people’s photos- but only if they allow that. You will always be able to add notes on your own photos.

Hopefully that helped! :-D

I feel sooo emasculated I have an lx3 and went nuts buying adapters and other crazy stuff to learn proper photography, I thought by bag was so cool for street photogrphy and then I see this manly, man collection of awesomeness gear and I feel like crying inside just a little bit,….sniff I just have to remind myself that we all have to take small steps before we fly…….LOL I really loved your description your wife is very cool to allow you to indulge in your art thank you for sharing and for a great laugh:)

Cheers

@Moniker007: While camera gear is fun to look at and buy, it doesn’t make one a good photographer…. Many a person on Flickr things that lots of gear equals good photos, yet there are MANY people on Flickr with tons of gear and almost no creative vision or talent.. yet they think if they buy more gear that it will make their photos turn out even better…

… use what you have and learn to be creative and use the camera to the best of your and it’s ability, you’ll be fine. You can do a lot with very little actually…
