35mm Focal-Plane Shutter SLR Camera

Marketed: November 1973
Original Price: 89,500 yen (w/FD 55mm f/1.4SSC)

This camera’s main feature was the first and last of its kind. It was the Copal Square, a vertical-travel, metal-curtain, focal-plane shutter.

The camera’s specifications and ease of use were ideal for aged users. Just press the shutter button for shutter speed-priority TTL automatic exposure. A silicon photocell was used for full-aperture centerweighted averaging metering. Fast shutter speeds from 1/2 sec. to 1/1000 sec. and bulb were mechanically-controlled while slow speeds from 1 sec. to 30 sec. were electronically-controlled.

Not my new, but the first SLR I used in the early 80s. This is the old EF from my father with a wonderful and yet expensive FD f/1.2 lens. It is a shame for Canon that there is no chance to use this lens with the EOS System.

I’m not satisfied with the reflection on the lens, but I do not have a softbox, or better two :-) This is a low budget tabletop shot in my formerly workshop down in the basement, now getting more and more a little studio for the dark winter month. First lesson: Low Key shots …

Oh ja, diese Kamera mit diesem Objetiv war ein Traum. Wie gerne hätte ich dieses Objektiv weiter verwandt (ich hatte dieselbe Ausrüstung, wie Du vielleicht gesehen hast).

Hey, cheers for that link. Hadnt seen that report. Had read an article that referred to it though. Interesting..some of it stating the obvious but a timely reminder anyway. Have a good weekend!

I used this Camera – Canon EF SLR for my weekend Landscape course. Wished I had remembered to use the memory lock, for compensating for the bright sky. It will be thrilling to see the eventual exposure on this Camera, as my meter seemed to be a half step over exposing, when compared to my Needle Camera Spotmatic F. Hoping the sensitive Silicon metering of my EF reflects this difference. Find out this Thursday, from Peak Imaging, UK

My Canon EF is my favourite camera..I use it all the time (yesterday, the day before etc etc, probably today too). All the pix on my photostream are taken with it. Nice to see I´m not alone here!

Do you own this lens?

If there was a vote for the Top 100 Cameras of all time. I bet this would be in the mid thirties ? I think the silicion photocell, shutter priority Canon F1 chasis design would be the benchmarks. I wonder how it would score against the Nikkormat EL ?
