…Gonna Go Back In Time… My ‘new‘ Canon EOS Elan 7 (http://www.photo.net/photo/canon/elan-7.html) with battery/vertical grip (BP-300), I now have a film camera that can use my Canon EF lenses.

Are you asking, why… Why Bryan did you buy a film camera. Well the answer is ‘because’… Because I wanted to do some B&W and cross-processing of color film. Sure you can do it in Photoshop for the most part but wanted to actually do the real thing.. I’m also wanted to try my hand at B&W film processing and printing.

…photo shot with my 20D and 24-70mm f/2.8L lens.

NOTE: This photo made it into Flickr’s ‘Explore" as one of the top five hundred most interesting photos on a particular day. You can see all of my photo’s that have made it into the Flickr Explore pages here.

….my friend has the same camera… he just got it… and loves it…

fensterbme on March 24th, 2011, 1:56 pm

@maneeacc: I’m looking forward to using it… The thing basically new in box, in mint shape… couldn’t ask for a nicer conditoned used camera. The battery grip was a nice touch…

Hi, what was your deciding factor on the Elan 7? I was thinking of getting an older one, maybe a Canon EOS A2/EOS 5. Good luck w/ the B&W, that’s my reason.

?Mean Mister Mustard? on March 24th, 2011, 3:17 pm

Wise choice, Bryan. I bet you’re going to love your 24-70 even more with this beaut.

extraspecial on March 24th, 2011, 4:07 pm

Nice! I keep thinking about pulling out my old Elan 2e body just for the hell of it. I have a bunch of expired film in the fridge, might as well do it for old time’s sake :)

fensterbme on March 24th, 2011, 4:58 pm

@janearlgarcia: Why the Elan 7? Well it was more modern than some of the older bodies, and it supported the Canon EX series speedlights. It’s control layout is also similar to the Canon 20D. I got this for a good price ($140 USD shipped to my door) and it came with the vertical grip so I can’t complain…

@Mean Mister Mustard: Thanks, Yeah the change in perspective is interesting (also makes me want the 5D even more, ha!).

@extraspecial: Yeah get out a few old roles and snap a few off just for fun. I still plan on shooting digital the vast majority of the time, this is just for fun and playing around.

Anemonehost on March 24th, 2011, 5:54 pm

I have one too and I love it!!!!

fensterbme on March 24th, 2011, 6:30 pm

@pinejar: Body and Grip both in the original packaging with all the docs and warranty cards. $140 Shipped… I thought it was a good deal as well. Got it from someone on Fred Miranda, I’ve had great luck there…

I’ve bought a Rebel XT($500 shipped like new in box), Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 ($275 shipped like new in box), Canon 10-22mm ($590 shipped like new in box), Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro($400 shipped like new in box) and now this… all worked out great and have got good to great prices on all of it. (note: not all of that gear was for me).

Amanda H&K on March 24th, 2011, 6:56 pm

I love that you had to point out that all the gear was not for you. ;)

fensterbme on March 24th, 2011, 7:50 pm

@Amanda H&K: Yeah I mean I don’t want anyone thinking that I have a habit of just ordering all kinds of gear…

Mad_T on March 24th, 2011, 8:17 pm

will you use a scanner (the cool nikon one)?

fensterbme on March 24th, 2011, 8:32 pm

@Mad_T: Likely not.. will just have processed and scanned at the lab. Will only get a CoolScan if I find I’m shooting a good bit of film.

Philly Stan on March 24th, 2011, 8:48 pm

So, what your saying is that santa will be putting a scanner under your tree…..

fensterbme on March 24th, 2011, 8:58 pm

@Philly Stan: Likley not… I’d rather Santa put the money towards other photography related toys…

I’m keeping my eye out for a cheap EOS 3, but I wouldn’t scoff at an Elan 7. Great price.

AlwaysJanuary (Randy) on March 24th, 2011, 9:43 pm

Considering I paid around $500 new for mine about 4 years ago(minus the grip), I’d say you got a great deal. There’s still some things about this camera I like better than my 20D. I keep it around mainly for B&W work(film still rocks for B&W!).

edscoble on March 24th, 2011, 9:50 pm

I like the fact that it look almost like the 20D actually.

I’m getting myself a Canon EOS 1n as film still prevail in many area, such as the white balance, the film speed, and being able to scan the negative to as high as you want, and cross processing as well, you can’t even able to achieve similar result with digital in Photoshop, as cross processing can be very different.

mano_lito on March 24th, 2011, 10:26 pm

B&W film rules, cheap and easy. If you can get a film scanner it´s also nice… Old school photoshop can´t be made with filters, unfortunately…

Alex Couey on March 24th, 2011, 11:10 pm

I love my Elan 7!!!!

yellowcornflakes on March 24th, 2011, 11:26 pm

I’ve owned my 7e for about four years now and it always finds it’s way into my bag. Next a couple weeks I’m picking up a 16-35 2.8L, full frame fullness. I’ll still use it on the XTi for the sweet spot in the lens but, the Elan will be doing most of my wide shots. I was looking at getting an EOS 3. I’d still keep the Elan.

fensterbme on March 24th, 2011, 11:53 pm

Yeah at this point I don’t really ever use this camera… even though I *can* shoot film, I shoot digital pretty much 100% of the time… I can get better and more consistant results and feel that it’s just not worth the hassle to shoot film.

I get that folks enjoy the process and craft behind playing around in the darkroom and using film, and that you can get a certain look that you can’t nessasarly get with digital, but I don’t feel that the certain look is a better look just a different one.

Rodrigo Neves on March 25th, 2011, 12:51 am

My Elan is coming, and I’d like to ask you a question: does it take modern EOS DSLR lenses as well? I was wondering that maybe the 18-55mm kit lens for most digital EOS bodies would fit this camera. Am I wrong?

fensterbme on March 25th, 2011, 12:54 am

@Rodrigo: Yes and No…

Does the Elan take modern EOS lenses? Definately it will take any Canon EF lens (which are designed to be able to be used on full-frame digital and film camera’s), even one’s just released this year.

However it will not take any Canon EF-S mount lenses, the EF-S mount lenses are designed only for digital APS-C crop factor camera’s such as the Digital Rebel/XXXD and 40D/50D camera’s. Canon EF-S lenses have smaller optics which cost less and work fine on a smaller sensor but they physically will not mount onto a full-frame, APS-H crop (1DMkIII with a 1.3x crop) or film camera. The Canon 18-55mm kit lens is an EF-S lens (which is denoted on the lens body and by the White Dot that marks where the lens positions against the mirror box ring on the body).

There are plenty of cheaper EF zoom lenses, such as the 28-80mm (which I think was the kit lens for number of film camera’s) or the 28-135mm which comes with IS. I’d look online for something if you need a lens for it. Since I shoot mostly full-frame digital or film camera’s I don’t have any of the Digital Only EF-S lenses.

After seeing this photo about the Elan 7, for the first time in 6 years, I opened up my new untouched Elan 7ne, BP-300, and Nikon 9000 CoolScan Neg Scanner – thank you for the trip back in time….Capricorn Man
