The too bright problem is easy to fix.. move back. The flash works great, unless you are too close. Anything closer than about 4 feet is too close. The camera can only turn the flash down so far, so it has a minimum distance from the subject to allow it to work properly. This will be explained in your manual.. even if it is just as one line “stay at least 4 feet from subject when using flash”.

Shadows? Not much you can do about it. There are special diffusers made for the pop-up flashes, but they don’t help much. Tossing a handkerchief over the flash does the same thing, plus you can blow you nose on it later.

Even a cheap manual flash with a bounce feature, placed in the hot shoe, will improve matters greatly. A 580EX II or two would be even better, but seriously, the pop-up flash is about the worst possible thing you can use to take pictures of people, and not good for most other subjects.
