Just hook it on the inside of the hub (the white ring and pull on it as you try to fit the flash assembly hole around it till it pops into place again.) It needs to move out about 3mm from its position after its dislodged inside. I don’t know what causes this but a lot of people seem to have this issue when the camera is of certain age or after heavy use of the flash. Probably happens though when the flash is up and it hits something hard enough to unclip the bushing barrel, then after several actuation, it slips into the recess far enough so the contact pin no longer pushes the switch into place.

This is the well-used D70. Not my brand new D90.
oh, by the way, tape any metal contacts you see here so you don’t touch it and accidentally discharge the flash capacitor on yourself — like I did. It’s quiite alarming… It felt like a jolt you get from shorting yourself on a AC outlet — Yes I did that before lots of times too.
