Is a top of the range canon SLR too much for an 18th birthday present from the family?
Question by Gingernutsnaps: Is a top of the range canon SLR too much for an 18th birthday present from the family?
She girl recieving the camera is still 17. She’s been shooting for 4 years and won’t be going to university until she’s 20. It is a digital SLR.

If she plans on shooting for money or as an actual job, no. Otherwise, she wouldn’t need that much power.

It depends on how rich her family is and how much they love her. By top range do you mean the Canon 1D-family? Must be a whole lot of lovin’ going on to blow $ 6,000+ on a birthday gift but that’s easy money for some people.
It’s great that she’s been sticking to a hobby with so continued interest but her age and history doesn’t amaze me. I’ve read features in magazines on even younger photographers who’ve been shooting longer than 4 years.
It may be a bit excessive in the eyes of the average person but what’s fine or not fine depends on the lifestyle of the family.
By the time she becomes 20 years of age, it is very likely that your expensive present [which will be 3 years old] may become obsolete due to ever changing camera technology. You would be better off financially by settling for a less expensive camera option at this time until you and your daughter can save for still another camera upgrade. Again, it’s a shame that consumers are denied the ability to purchase future technology because camera manufacturers choose to dole out new models whenever it most profitable for them to do so.
Good luck!
Let the birthday girl herself contribute most of the thinking on this decision, and discuss your options together as a family. That would allow her to sort through the priorities in life, as well as appreciate the sacrifices required of you to support her goals. 18th birthday is a big milestone, so she can start sharing ownership in the family decisions.
Happy Birthday to her!!!
It depends. If the person receiving the camera is really serious about photography and wants to do this as a profession, then it’s not unreasonable. Even if she’s only going to collage when she’s 20, that doesn’t mean that this camera will be obsolete if you get a really good one. However those can cost 1,000-2,000 dollars. it also depends on the economical situation of the family.
In my opinion yes.Younger people “some but not all” often lack maturity and judgement. Will she lend it out? Drop it? Can she use all that this camera can offer? Or is it a waste of money? I am far from poor,But I wouldn’t buy a 18 year old a $ 5,000 camera. It is called spoiled in my book. If she wanted a $ 500 camera maybe $ 5,000 she bettor get a job.
