The 1978-era Nikon FE is a great student camera, a value in a manual-focus film SLR with a light meter and aperture-priority auto-exposure, especially because the excellently-built manual-focus AI and AI-S Nikkor lenses that go with it are also well priced used.

Plus it can use older non-AI lenses (1959-1977), as well as many newer AF Nikkors (1986 and newer) too. The FE is small but very solidly constructed. Here’s a nice review and user’s guide.
