My budget SLR gear
Canon SLR

My current photo enthusiast gear. It’s not impressive at all, but it keeps me happy. Not pictured are a cheap no-brand tripod, the old Powershot S410 (used to take this picture), a Lowepro D300 AW shoulder bag and a Tamrac 5547 backpack. In the wishlist: Canon 430EXII or Metz 48 flashgun, Sigma 150mm f/2.8 macro lens and a 190XPROB tripod with a 486RC2 ball head.

The 10-22 has a nice color rendition and supplies all my wideangle needs. The 50mm f/1.4 is my favorite lens and is very sharp at f/2.8 and quite usable at f/2.0. The 28-135 covers the rest of short-medium tele range, it’s quite sharp from f/8 to f/11 and it’s my landscape and general purpose lens. Now my needs are leaning towards a fast, sharp medium tele prime and a macro lens — the Sigma 150mm f/2.8 could very well fit these two roles.

nice set! the 10-22mm is very much top of the line.

Seen on your photo stream. (?)

Ah yes, excellent lens, I love it. With a larger budget I’d replace the 28-135 with the 24-105 f/4L, and get the 200mm f/2.8L as a sports lens (the Sigma 150 AF performance is somewhat lackluster according to reviewers). The big zooms are too bulky for me, and I like the primes’ extra sharpness :)

Now you have to take a picture of the powershot with this camera.

Yes. And hopefully using a better background than standard A4 sheets laid side by side on the living room floor (that’s what I used in the picture above).

this is my exact setup!

Claudio Matsuoka on October 19th, 2010, 4:05 pm

Only the body and lenses, or up to the ebay hoods?

nhanson454 on October 19th, 2010, 4:15 pm

Everything but the hoods. I need to get a polarizing filter for my 10/22mm.

your gear looks in such good condition.. i have a similar rig:

450D
70-200 f2.8 IS L-series
50mm 1.8 prime
28mm 2.8 prime (m42 mount)

missing wide angle would love the 10-22. but my gear is in bad condition as i travel allot in harsh conditions… desert, mountains, snow…

is your hood have flock (black velvet lining) inside? where did you get it from?

Very useful! I added this to a new Gallery, which says…
I’m so often asked by people what gear they should buy. Here in the Canon Gear Recommendations Gallery I’m assembling good resources to refer people to. Entries in this Gallery will be rotated from time-to-time, so if your item appears and is later removed, it is not because of love lost, but just because we want to project new ideas and also keep up with changes in technology. You can contact me, the gallery owner at mike [at} mikebaird d o t com or use FlickrMail mikebaird

Where did you get the 1 dollar hood from?

Claudio Matsuoka on October 19th, 2010, 7:21 pm

Ebay. Not great, but it works.

DownsPhotography on October 19th, 2010, 7:55 pm

Great photo! Thanks for making it public. I used it on my article about digital cameras.
