I have some digital gear, all Nikon, and would love to round out my arsenal with a nice film camera. I know that the prices on film SLR cameras has dropped A LOT – can someone give me a nice model SLR that would be great for those days when I want to shoot some film?

I would say to go to adorama and look at the Nikon F4 or F5 they were professional level SLR in thier day but now are available at a very good price used.

Look for a Nikon N50 or N80. I sold my N80 but still have the N50. It is by far the best 35mm I have ever used.
You can pick them up cheap on Craigslist or EBay.
The F100 was one of the best! It ran forever on 4 AA’s, has a beautiful full viewfinder and was built like a rock. In the dark if you picked up an F100 or a D200 you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. All of the controls were in the same place. It’s smaller than an F5 and has pretty near the same features. You should be able to find a decent used one for a few hundred bucks today…
If you want full automation F90x/F100/F4/F5 are all reasonably priced on the used market.
F4 has matrix metering with manual focus lenses. It was the workhorse of many pros for years.
F90x was the prosumer model in between the F4 and F5, heavy for something so compact and relatively noisy, but fast CH mode and dirt cheap used now (USD100 or so)
F5 is big and bulky but feature-rich and built like a tank, as were all the single digit Fs.
F100 is probably the second most refined and comfortable film SLR Nikon ever made, second only to the F6.
If on the other hand you want manual focus goodness, look at an FE, FA or FM/FM2.
The F100 Nikon would probably be your best bet.
