Should I buy a Canon SLR camera on Amazon or from a local store in Washington/Boston?
Question by superstar: Should I buy a Canon SLR camera on Amazon or from a local store in Washington/Boston?
I plan on buying a Canon EOS 450D and two lenses, a tripod and a camera bag. It’s my first SLR so I figured I should get the equipment!
Is it safe to ship an SLR camera? Would there be any damage to the sensor and such?
So far,Amazon and B&H Photo seems like the best picks.

i got mine from amazon, if u order few months ago u didn’t have to paid tax. Think they charge tax now, but price still pretty good, with free shipping, save you trips to store. just need to know what u want.
Which one do you mean? Personally i think you can use pricegrabber to search for the lowest price for it.

Get it at the store. If you are going to drop a grand, you want to look and play with it a bit first.
If you already made up your mind as to exactly what you are getting, there is no point in getting it in a local store, unless you can get it cheaper.
Amazon is an amazing retailer in that respect. Very good and flexible return policy, should you have problems with it, they usually ship pretty fast, and they are usually cheaper than brick and mortar stores.
Also a few notes on previous answers:
1. Amazon only started charging tax to New York state residents, because of a law the state recently passed that re-defined what physical presence in state is. Amazon is also suing New York state claiming the law is ill-written, and should be repealed.
2. Be very careful with pricegrabber and others. There are many scam shops online that advertise low price, but then pull you into buying overpriced accessories and/or “upgrading” your camera to something else. Always use http://www.resellerratings.com/ to check the reputation of a dealer you buy from. Stay away from anyone rated below 8 or so. And read the reviews, see what the complaints are all about.
Good luck!
You’ve picked great camera, so you have a lot of fun ahead of you! Enjoy!

Check out http://adorama.com or http://bhphotovideo.com for your camera, they offer the best service, and warranties. they are very reputatble, and will help if you have any future issues. Not all the stores on amazon are that reliable.
If you know exactly what you want and don’t have any questions get wherever it is cheapest. If you do need some accesories or advice go to a store. In the Washington area try Penn Camera. They have several locations in D.C., MD and Northern VA. Camera body only $749. Amazon $729 plus shipping.
If in the Boston area try the Camera Company on Rt. 1 in Norwood. Same price as Penn Camera.

If you don’t want to wait a few days for it to be shipped out to you, get it at the local store. But you’d save some money if you ordered it from Amazon though.
