you can just pick up a DSLR camera and play point n’ shoot with it. But that is the one thing that you really should not do. You may get better pictures, but the whole reason for DSLR is for you to be in complete control of your camera.

If you want to learn SLR, go get a cheep film camera, yes film. Learn how to use that, there are plenty of guides and techniques that you can learn online.
after you know what you are doing as in, know how to change settings accordingly, I would suggest getting a DSLR for maximum happiness and better, way better picture quality.

I own a Rebel XS and it’s a great camera. Superb photos and a very tough build.

However, like so many who really don’t know photography, you seem to think that photography is
90% camera and 10% shooter when actually it’s the other way around. You’re putting the card before the horse if you think an SLR is going to improve your photography. It will improve the quality of the photos it won’t improve your photography. For that you need lots (perhaps years) of experience.
Trust me on this.

If you are not willing to learn the basics of photography by reading a book, nor read and re read your owner’s manual, and really learn your DSLR, then paying big bucks on it is a waste of money. Any boob can buy a $ 1000- camera and leave it on auto. That is not what buying a DSLR is all about.
