for starting out I suggest four cameras for you to choose from. If you are a beginner, the D90 will prove too much for you to handle, and is probably more then you want to spend as your first DSLR camera.
the four cameras are as followed:
Nikon D3000
Nikon D3100
Canon Rebel Xs
Canon Rebel Xsi
these cameras are between $ 500-$ 700, the D3100 being the best as it has the best sensors, but it is also the most expensive out of the group.
Do look at taking a photography class to help explain how to change ISO, Shutter speed, and Aperture accordingly. Expect to pay $ 550 at the least for an adequate setup.

Hey,
First of all, ignore those answers with Amazon links. They just copy someone else’s interview and hope that you’ll buy from their affiliate link.
Why is the cheapest Canon your 2nd option? You can get
- Canon EOS XS
- Canon EOS XSi
- Canon EOS T1i
- Canon EOS T2i
or
- Nikon D3000
- Nikon D3100
- Nikon D5000
- Nikon D90
All models are D90 price or less.
Okay, quality is the same from all, until we go to ISO 1600+. There, Canon EOS T2i, D90 and D3100 win. But you notice any differences if you view your pictures on the monitor.
The T2i has 18 vs 14 and 12 megapixels, more video features. The D3100 doesn’t have an AF motor (so older lenses and some other wont auto focus), it has the best AF while recording videos so far, the D90 has an AF motor and is biggest from all.
Here’s a post called ‘Buying a DSLR, what’s important, megapixels, features, brand, price, quality and which one to get – http://www.the-dslr-photographer.com/2009/03/which-dslr-to-buy.html
Good luck!
