The best brands for cameras are Nikon and Canon. I am about to buy my first SLR this week or next week. I have done so much research and i have found out that the best SLR for a beginner to SLRs is the Nikon D40. I am going to purchase it. It is $ 400-$ 450 but it comes with a lens. I dont think that there are many good SLRs that are $ 200. Also, the lenses are sometimes more than the actual camera. You might want to look at Point-and-Shoot cameras. Thay are pretty affordable and in that price range. Make sure that you get one with a pretty good optical zoom. You will need optical zoom, trust me.

What do you think? Answer below!

well becca i think you are a little screwed price wise but dont feel too bad bank your cash and wait to get a good nikon like a d40 or a d60 cause i dont now how much longer you can get a D80, the lenses are the best of any on the market, i recently went from a cannon to a nikon body as i was slowly moving across brands with the lenses. and the only thing that you must remember is that the money you spend on lenses will keep value longer then the body, a body is obsolete in a year, a lense will last you a decade if you treat it well, good luck on the hunt

There is no such thing as a best brand, no matter what anyone tells you. They each have some advantages over the other. Nikon and Canon owners will no doubt try to sway you to one brand or the other.

There is also no such thing as a beginner dSLR. The two thousand dollar one isn’t harder to use than the 500 dollar one.

Next, no there are no 200 dollar ones, not even close. You are very young, and I understand money is tight, you have some options.

The big three are Canon, Nikon and Sony, but don’t count out Pentax and Olympus.

If you want to get a dSLR it’s craigslist.org or ebay. But before you do that, it would be a good idea to learn more about dSLRs in general and how the different brands bring different things to the table.

Used Canon and Nikon will be your best bet simply because there are so many used C & N bodies out there. Everyone loves to recommend the Nikon d40 but not me. I see too many people complaining because the entry level Nikon bodies don’t autofocus certain lenses. Otherwise the cameras are fine.

Old Canon XT and XTi bodies are a dime a dozen. Save your pennies, you can get a body only, for around 200-275 bucks. If you are lucky, you might be a cheap lens thrown in. But again, save, you can get an ok lens for not a lot of money. Even the cheap stuff is better than anything you’ll ever see on a cheap compact digital camera.

You can find the Sony A100 for cheap these days (2006 model) but I don’t recommend it for one reason. I owned it, nice camera, but the images were too noisy in my opinion. The A200 is much better, 499 with a lens, but again, out of your range. But you never know, you could come across a A200 if someone needs the cash bad, you could get a deal.

Man I wish there were digital cameras when I was 16 [sigh]

Good luck

Sound Labs is right. To find a great brand of camera, you should get out to Best Buy or Target, or wherever you buy your toilet paper, bananas and electronics, and study (and even hold) some different cameras. Nikon, Canon, Pentax and Olympus are all brands recognized for excellence. Sony has been making quite the leap in dSLR technology as well.

As far as prices go, I’m afraid you probably won’t find a dSLR for under $ 450.00, unless you can find one used, and even then, the costs will probably not drop below $ 300.00.

I saved up every penny for my D60. And whereas I used to shoot with a Samsung P&S, now I use only my D60. It’s a workhorse.

But for the price you suggest, there are some great point-and-shoot cameras out there to be had.

Good luck.
