What is the best general purpose lens for a Canon SLR?
Question by Lars: What is the best general purpose lens for a Canon SLR?
Basically, the standard lens is a piece of crap and I need a better one. I have a Digital Rebel XT, and I want one with a wide variety of choices. Id like to take pictures of thunderstorms and stars and such, so Id like it to have a wide aperture. And just general use. Any sugguestions?

Any lens with a wide aperture, like 2.8, is going to cost you big. You could shoot thunderstorms with you standard lens and get great result’s, provided you know how to use it. I”d get a 28-135 or 200 zoom lens, Canon or Sigma or Tamron.

I don’t know who you’ve been talking to, but none of the Canon lenses are crummy … the 18-55 mm lens is a good general lens. NO lens that Canon makes is bad … they would not be one of the two providers of professional cameras if they made anything that was of low quality.
The difference between f/2.8 and f/3.5 is only a third of a stop, the difference between ISO 100 and 125 … not a lot.
You can always buy the 50 mm f/1.4 if you want fast, but then you will not have the variety of focal lengths the zoom will give you.
On my camera most of the time is my 28-200mm lens. I can take wide angle shots at 28mm or zoom in for longer telephoto shots at 200mm. I have the 18-55mm and just used it for shooting kids with Santa event. I have really never gotten used to a lens that short for the majority of my shooting needs. This is just one person’s opinion and I am not the “end all, be all” for sure. Hope that helps.
