do a degree either in media studies or filmography and build up a good portfolio. You’d have to start off at a lower level and work your way up though. good luck!

Your best bet is to study cinematography, video, and film. If you have the option of taking photography, it compliments videography quite well. Any other technical courses are always suggested too. People that handle cameras need to know a lot about the hardware and how to operate it. In many cases they have to solve problems and improvise quickly while out in the field or on air.
However I do want to bring this to your attention, but many news stations employ robots to actually work the cameras, the “camera operator” in many cases is just a director. They often tag team shows, one directs while the other works the robots.
Now there are still photogs (photographers), the people who go out on location with a reporter or solo to get shots of things a station may need for a package or live.
Director and photog are two very different positions. But to become a director you need experience as a photog.
