I was under the impression that lenses used on film SLR’s could be used on their digital counter part. So really it shouldn’t matter

Well, nikon uses the same mount on all their professional slrs, be it digital or slr. So using a 50 year old Nikon lens on a brand new Nikon DSLR would not have any problems.
You have lots of options. All Nikon digital SLR cameras use the Nikon “F” lens mount which has been the Nikon standard for decades. You can generally use any Nikon “F” mount lens on any “F” mount camera. There are some exceptions, but for the majority of Nikon’s huge lens collection, it’s as simple as attaching the lens and turning on the camera.
However, you may not get all of the functions in a digital SLR to work with an older lens. In worst cases, you might have to adjust the exposure and focus manually because the camera’s automatic functions aren’t compatible.
Of particular note is the newst Nikon D40 and D40x cameras. They will only autofocus with newer Nikon “AF-S” lenses. You can use other lenses on the D40 and D40x in manual focus.
The Nikon D80 is autofocus compatible with older and newer autofocus lenses.

With the exception of the D40, any almost any autofocus Nikon lens that works on a Nikon Film camera, will work fine on a Nikon Digital Nikon SLR.
Non auto focus “Ai” lenses (which means almost any non auto focus Nikon lens made in the past 25 years), can also be used on these digital SLRs – however, the light meter will not work when using a non autofocus lens except on the higher end cameras such as the D200 and D2x.
