What’s the best portrait lens to use on a Canon slr?
Question by Miranda: What’s the best portrait lens to use on a Canon slr?
I haven’t bought my camera yet, so I don’t know what kind of canon it will be, but if I want to take a bunch of cute, professional style portraits, what’s the best kind of lens to use? Or, which lens should I NOT use?

Use a slightly longer than “normal” lens for portraits.
The worst lens would be something wider than normal, as it tends to magnify the nose, or in group shots it magnifies anybody who’s closer to the camera more than those further away. Although you can make some pretty funny pictures of people using a fisheye lens and moving in really close.
For portraits, I use a Canon 50mm f/1.4 and a 70-200 f/2.8L
The best advice I can is that it’s actually good to buy the EF series lenses, that way if you upgrade your camera, the lenses will work fine. BUT never try to put an EF-S lens on an EF only camera. The S is for “short back focus”, which means that the rear element of the lens is closer to the image sensor than on a regular lens.
As a basic rule of thumb…buy the best lens with the widest aperture you can afford. The lower the aperture(f/stop) number, the more light it allows in. A f/1.4 allows more light than a f/2.8 (f/1.4> f/2.8> f/4.3> f/5.6> f/8> f/11> f/16, etc..)
