what’s the difference between canon SLR and powershot digital camera?
Question by pogi: what’s the difference between canon SLR and powershot digital camera?
Best answer:
Answer by Jas
Canon SLR= pricey and more professional/high end
cheapest retails around $ 500
the are quite advanced compared to PowerShots and are geared towards photography more as an art
Canon Powershot= inexpensive and mainly point and shoot
most expensive retails at $ 500
geared toward photography as a way of saving part of a memory…if that makes sense kind of.
except for the most expensive powershots those are kind of compact versions of a camera that is little bit more high end
btw I’m not saying you can’t use powershots for photography as an art im saying it was made more for capturing memories…also not saying memory capture is not an art…
wow that whole “answer” probably made no sense…..sorry!

Are you talking about a SLR or DSLR?
I will assume you meant to say DSLR.
The sensors are different sizes … the DSLR sensor is over 15 times larger.
The lenses on DSLR’s are interchangeable. What ever you buy on the powershot P&S camera you will have to live with until you buy a new one or upgrade to a DSLR
The shutter lag on DSLR’s is measured in milliseconds, not seconds like P&S cameras.
DSLR’s are fully adjustable cameras and while they do have automatic features if wanted, their shutter speeds and f/stops can be individually controlled. P&S cameras are pretty much fully automatic
DSLR’s are based upon standard 35 mm SLR cameras and share many of the same controls and featuers … P&S cameras are much smaller as a rule (except for SLR-like cameras) and can be carried in a pocket or purse.
DSLR’s can cost up to $ 8,000 for a camera body only. P&S cameras generally cost less than $ 300 except for a few which can cost up to $ 500.
Just to clarify what fhotoace said: DSLRs *can* cost up to $ 8000 (actually some can be $ 40,000) but that doesn’t mean they have to. As the first poster said, you can get a DSLR starting at $ 500. I think the Nikon D40 with lens is $ 550.
