Which Nikon reflex digital cameras will accept older AI lenses from non-digital cameras?
Question by Beverly: Which Nikon reflex digital cameras will accept older AI lenses from non-digital cameras?
I have a collection of lenses for my older Nikon cameras. I would like to go digital w/out having to re-outfit completely. I am not interested in camera bodies that yield only 6.1 mega pixels but would consider pre-used.

My Nikon D300 (12 mp) can use all my old AI and AI converted lenses as can my older D200 (10 mp)

You will need a D200/300 and up if you want them to auto-meter.
I think all the Nikon DSLR’s can work with these lenses, as long as they are AI. Non-AI lenses would be a problem for the cameras that have AF-D autofocus couplings.
The lenses that are not AF-D or AF-S will be manual focus, manual exposure only. They will not give you exposure metering except for the D200 and D300. Those can calculate from the mechanical coupling how many stops difference there is between your aperture ring setting and the wide-open setting at which it is measuring the image brightness. The lower models can only know the aperture setting electronically, and therefore won’t make an exposure recommendation on lenses that have no electronic connection.
Take a look at the links below for compatibility charts of which Nikon bodies work with which lenses and what functionality they provide.
You’re looking at at least a D200 or D300 if you want metering. D200 goes for about $ 600 used, and the D300 is about $ 1700.
