Question by Salman M: Why are Pentax DSLR cameras considerably cheaper than Canon or Sony? Is it because of the quality?
I’ve seen a Pentax DSLR that I really like and from the technical descriptions seems to be a very good product. However, when I compare its much lower price with a similar Canon or Sony, it makes me suspicious. Is there a catch for Pentax cameras that I’m not aware of?

my bro-in law had a k100 something and it took awesome images. you’ll find a lot of the pros recommend it as an entry level DSLR, much like the other nikons and canons.

What do you think? Answer below!

My dad was a Pentax man all the way. It was the hot camera to have in the 70′s especially. We both had one and now I own both along with numerous lenses and zooms now that he has passed away. I can’t attest to the newer ones, but the Pentax camera is a good brand. I also have a Canon Powershot now that I like, but will perhaps upgrade. I just don’t know if the lenses transfer over in brands as I am not up on all of this. Honestly I think the higher price goes with supply and demand. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy either one. Chose what features you like the best. You can’t go wrong.

There’s nothing wrong with Pentax. I think that their low prices are to draw more costumers away from the big brands. I have used the Canon Rebel XTi, Nikon D40x, and the Pentax K10D and they are all very good. I have the K10D so I’ve been using them more. My cousins have the Canon and Nikon ones.

The only con is that Pentax’s lens range is much less than Canon and Nikon

Canon and Nikon own 80% of the DSLR market.

They spend the R&D dollars and they set the pace.

Everybody else plays catch-up and that’s why they can’t command the price.

HTH.

I have used Pentax SLRs since 1975. I think I own about 8 or 9 film SLR bodies.

My current workhorse is a four year old Pentax DSLR *istDS.

Conistently the cameras have proved reliable.

Pentax lenses are generaly well made quality units. Their premium lenses are excellent.

Recently Carl Zeiss introduced a new line of their ultimate lenses for DSLRs specifically for Pentax cameras.

Maybe the question should be why are Canon and Sony cameras so expensive?

Do not judge a camera by a particular brand. If the final outcome is a sharp, contrasty and colorful print, who cares what brand of camera you used to capture the image.

Good luck!

The quality is the same, if canon and nikon are more expensive it’s for marketing reasons…

Pentax doesn’t pay for actor sponsorship (Andre Aggasi) or placement on TV shows (Nikon is all over the CSI, CSI:NY).

Pentax did have Steve Irwin (Crocidile Hunter) back in the late 90′s doing their ad spots though….

They don’t toss the big bucks into advertisingand have you pay for it in the long run, they just make good cameras.
